MIDFIELDER ON SPURS RADAR

United States midfielder Weston McKenniehas been on the radar of Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur since last summer according to the report from Italian publication Calciomercato. The USA international was linked with a move to Spurs at the start of last season while Jose Mourinho was still at the club. Mourinho was dismissed from the position in April after the league season fell apart under his watch.

Since sacking Mourinho as their manager, Tottenham Hotspur have not been able to name a replacement for him. Former midfielder Ryan Mason held the position on an interim basis until last season and he led the club to seventh position in the league and a place in the newly formed European Conference League. Also, Mason led the club to the Carabao Cup final defeat to Premier League champions.

Spurs chairman wanted Antonio Conte to take charge before talks broke down between the two parties due to the unrealistic demands from the Italian tactician. One of the many demands from Conte was the signing of USA international McKennie who was already on the list of possible transfer targets. The USA midfielder has an admirer in Conte who wanted the club to sign him from Juventus this summer.

Conte is a free agent at the moment after leaving Inter Milan whom he led to the Italian Serie A title at the end of last season. He won the league title for the Nerazzuri for the first time in over a decade since the treble-winning season in 2010. Italian tactician Conte left the Nerazzuri by mutual consent this summer after disagreeing with the owners over transfers. Transfers played a big part in the breakdown of talks between him and Spurs thereby leading the club to abandon talks and move to other targets such as Paulo Fonseca and GennaroGattuso.
